Teaching grammar can be BORING, but we use interactive notebooks with our kiddos to introduce and teach concepts, which makes it just a bit more fun. However, practicing grammar with worksheets or from our grammar workbook is really where we start to lose our students. Especially when it comes to subjects and predicates because this can be a really tough concept for students to grasp. After scouring the internet and not finding very many fun grammar review games on this concept, we decided, hey, we'll just make one for ourselves then!
So, we created this Subjects and Predicates Sorting Activity and our students loved it. They were engaged for an entire 45 minutes straight.
We put our students in pairs and gave them 4 green title cards that said "Simple Subject," "Complete Subject," "Simple Predicate," and "Complete Predicate" on them. Then, we gave them 40 different phrases or words that were to fall into one of these four categories. Their job was to sort them first and then record their findings on a worksheet that we would all easily be able to correct together and that they could take home to study from.
Walking around the room and hearing students say, "Well, that's a verb, so it can't be the subject of the sentence!" or, "So this is a noun, but there's a prepositional phrase after it, it must be a Complete Subject!" was simply thrilling and made us smile ear-to-ear. To see our students having fun while practicing a grammar concept was remarkable! And after their assessment on this concept, it seems as though it has stuck because our class average was quite impressive!
